How plywood weight is calculated

The weight of a plywood sheet equals its volume × density. Volume is length × width × thickness. Density varies by material:

MaterialDensity (kg/m³)Density (lb/ft³)
Pine / SPF50031.2
Douglas Fir53033.1
OSB65040.6
Plywood (generic)70043.7
Particleboard70043.7

4×8 (48″×96″)1/2″~40 lb (18 kg)
4×8 (48″×96″)3/4″~60 lb (27 kg)
4×8 (48″×96″)1″~80 lb (36 kg)

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4×8 sheet of 3/4 plywood weigh?

A 4×8 (48″×96″) sheet of 3/4″ generic plywood weighs approximately 60 lb (27 kg) at a density of 700 kg/m³. Birch and oak plywoods are heavier; pine and softwood plywoods are lighter.

How is plywood weight calculated?

Multiply the sheet volume (length × width × thickness) by the wood's density. The calculator above does this automatically.

What is the weight of MDF compared to plywood?

MDF is about 8–10% heavier than generic plywood. A 4×8 sheet of 3/4″ MDF weighs approximately 65 lb (29 kg), versus about 60 lb (27 kg) for the same sheet in plywood.

Is this a free alternative to Cutlist Optimizer Pro?

Yes. OptiSaw offers a free, no-sign-up alternative to paid tools like Cutlist Optimizer, MaxCut, and SketchList. It runs entirely in your browser, supports 2D sheet goods and 1D lumber, and exports printable PDF cut plans.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Both this calculator and the OptiSaw cut list optimizer run entirely in your browser. You can also install OptiSaw as a Progressive Web App for offline use.
